NCU Jiangxi Medical College (Medical Department) is originated from Jiangxi Public Medical College founded in 1921. It was renamed Jiangxi Provincial Medical College in 1952 and Jiangxi Medical College in 1953 successively. In 1958, it merged with the Eighth Military Medical School of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, it was still known as Jiangxi Medical College. In 1969, it merged with Jiangxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, thus Jiangxi Medical University was founded. In November 1972, the university separated into Jiangxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Jiangxi Medical College. In August 2005, it merged with Nanchang University and was named School of Medicine, Nanchang University. In 2014, the college was named as the Medical Department Nanchang University and externally named as Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University.

Since its founding over one hundred years ago, Jiangxi Medical College has been committed to the founding spirit of Lofty Virtues and Excellent Medical Skills and carrying forward the college ethos of Preciseness, Diligence, Solidarity, Creativity. The college has cultivated numerous outstanding medical professionals who have made contributions at home and abroad, such as alumni ZHAO Baige, DING Jian, RAO Yi, MEI Lin and GUAN Yi, etc.

With an area of 682,400 m2 (1,024 acres), Jiangxi Medical College consists of two campuses: Donghu Campus and Qianhu Campus. So far, there are the institute of clinical medicine for junior undergraduates, the institute of basic medical science, and some research institutions in Qianhu Campus, which covers an area of approximately 200,000 m2. Whilst in Donghu Campus there are the institute of clinical medicine for senior undergraduates, the postgraduate institute, administrative organizations, and research institutions, which covers an area of approximately 150,000 m2. Besides, 5 directly affiliated hospitals and 8 non-directly affiliated hospitals are attached to Jiangxi Medical College.

Undergraduate Education: Jiangxi Medical College consists of 13 schools and academies (School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, Nursing School, Queen Mary School, Huankui Academy, First Clinical School, Second Clinical School, Third Clinical School, Fourth Clinical School, School of Stomatology, School of Optometry and School of Pediatrics) and 2 centers (Clinical Medicine Center, Science Center for Laboratory Animal). It has 7997 full-time undergraduate students (including 1247 students of the China-UK Joint Education Program) and 715 overseas students. The college has 15 full-time undergraduate majors, 1 state-level characteristic specialty, 8 national first-class majors, and 3 majors accredited by the Ministry of Education, and was ranked among the best in the province-level comprehensive rating of undergraduate majors in the recent two years. Furthermore, the college has one of the National Virtual Simulation Experiment Centers, one of the National Teaching Demonstration Centers for Clinical Medicine, one of the National Teaching and Training Demonstration Centers for Clinical Skills, one of the National Teaching Bases for Off-campus Practice for college students, one of the National Outstanding Talents Education and Training Program, as well as one curriculum ideological and political demonstration course, one famous teacher and one famous team at the Ministry level. In recent years, both the students and teachers have achieved fruitful results in China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and National Competition of Medical Skills for College Students, 1 of which won the First Prize in the National Teachers' Teaching Innovation Competition.

Postgraduate Education: There are 4676 full-time postgraduate students, 583 doctoral candidates, 1722 postgraduates with equivalent academic qualifications and 778 on-the-job doctoral candidates. The college possesses 6 doctoral degree fist-level subjects (clinical medicine, basic medical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, public health and preventive medicine, nursing and oral clinical dentistry), and 8 master degree first-level subjects.

Faculty: The college has 252 full-time teachers, including 155 teachers with doctor's degrees and 78 teachers with senior professional titles; 1395 clinical teachers, including 482 teachers with doctor's degrees and 473 teachers with senior professional titles; 1 selected candidate of the National Key Program for Innovative Talents, 1 selected candidate of the National Key Program for Young Talents, 1 selected candidate of the National Special Program for High-Level Talents, 3 distinguished professors of the National Key Talent Project, 3 distinguished professors of the National Key Talent Project of Ministry of Education and 5 distinguished professors of the Jinggang Scholar” in Jiangxi Province. Besides, there are 1 winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund and 5 of the National Talents Program and 1 of the Program for New (Cross-) Century Excellent Talents in University at the ministerial level.

Discipline: In 2021, the clinical medicine discipline entered the top 2.07‰ of ESI in the global ranking; pharmacology, toxicology, molecular biology, and genetics entered the top 5‰, biology and biochemistry, neuroscience, and behavioristics entered the top 1%. And the College was ranked 37th on the list of 2020 national best universities in overall strength and clinical medicine. The 2020 STEM Report of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences showed that the college was in 26th place among the national medical universities and colleges. In the ranking of medical disciplines, 10 disciplines of its affiliated hospitals entered the top 50 in China. The clinical medicine discipline has been highlighted as the Construction of First-Class Discipline in universities of Jiangxi province, the advantage discipline integrated with the industrial development of NCU under the joint establishment of the Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province, the key discipline of NCU under the joint establishment of Ministry of Education and Jiangxi Province and the first-class discipline under the Double First-Class Construction of the 14th Five-Year Plan in Jiangxi Province.

Scientific Research Platform: The College has 1 National-Local Engineering Research Center of the National Development and Reform Commission, 1 National Demonstration Center for the Application of Genetic Testing Technology, 1 innovation team of Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program of the Ministry of Education, 1 Engineering Research Center of Ministry of Education, 11 National Key Clinical Specialties, 5 National Institutes for Clinical Drug Trials and 1 Postdoctoral Mobile Research Station for Clinical Medicine. Besides, the college has 2 provincial 2011 collaborative innovation centers, 45 provincial key laboratories or research centers, 9 provincial competitive scientific and technological innovation teams, 4 high-level key laboratories or research centers of colleges and universities in Jiangxi, 14 provincial research centers for clinical medicine, 2 provincial clinical medicine stations for academicians, 2 stations for HOME Program and 2 college-level independent institutes.

Scientific and Technological Innovation Capacity: Since 2017, the college has been responsible for 4927 scientific research projects of various levels, including 8 major and key projects, such as national key research and development plans, major science and technology projects. 955 National Natural Science Foundation projects (including 3 key projects), with a total scientific research fund of 414 million yuan. In 2021, it won 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, achieving a zero breakthrough in the biomedical field of Jiangxi province. In 2022, it won 181 NSFC projects and 1 National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars for the first time.

In recent five years, over 6500 academic theses have been published, 4400 of which were included in SCI journals. The College has won 98 science and technology awards at the province and minister level or above, including 8 first awards and 36 second awards. In 2017, it won the second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award (the second place), and the second prize in the Science and Technology Progress Award for Outstanding Achievements of the Ministry of Education. More than 30 scientific and technological achievements have been transferred, transformed, and applied.

In the new era, NCU Jiangxi Medical College will march on a new journey.
